Check Your Ego at the Door

I'd never claim to know it all - far from it. I am just like every other Indie filmmaker and producer out there trying to navigate a path through new media, social networks and cyberspace, doing what I can to get the word out about Tinker and Tater to the masses.

That being said, I have learned a few lessons along the way and will do what I can to share those experiences with others.

My hardest lesson to learn was to keep my ego in check. I'm passionate about what I do, and I come to the table believing that each project will be a huge success. In the past I found I would become agitated, and often angry when my masterpiece was overlooked time and time again.

One day I was looking through MySpace bulletins. In less than an hour I had received over 200 bulletins from different bands around the globe. To a man, everyone of those bulletins was a "look at me, look at me" shout out. Nothing wrong with that - If you don't announce yourself no one will listen anyway. But my initial reaction was "You want me to listen to your music and you won't pay attention to a damn thing I send you? Eat me!" I sat back and smiled and thought "Their marketing strategy has failed." It took me several days to realize that they hadn't failed, I had.

Everyone believes that they're project is the greatest idea ever. Everyone is egocentric. Everyone seeks the same praise. Everyone wants to feel important. If you want to build a loyal fanbase, then take the time out of your busy schedule to see what others are doing.

There are a thousand ways to cheat, some of them are well documented. But when it comes right down to it, there is no interaction, there is nothing that is going to hold your audience your long term vision and you've become nothing more than a flash in the pan.

Personally, I'm looking to build a strong foundation of audience members. It may take me longer, but in the end the price paid will be well worth the results.
